Wind Power Generation - Turn Wind into Electricity

Wind is one of those forces of nature that leave no doubt about their power. Anyone who has experienced gale force winds cannot fail to respect their tremendous energy. Using this force for wind power generation is a logical step in our search for alternative energy sources that will free us from our dependency on fossil fuels.

Actually, using the wind to produce electricity is not a new concept. Windmills had been used for thousands of years to pump water and grind grain, so when electricity began to find common applications it was only natural that people tried to find ways to produce electricity with wind turbines.

Wind turbines were popular features in rural landscapes from the 1920s. They were fitted with propeller blades and could produce enough power for lights, power tools, and even refrigerator and freezers.

As rural areas began to have access to utility company power grids, wind power generators became less popular. It is only in recent years that there has been resurgence in interest in these devices.

Today, wind power is an alternative to coal or gas driven power plants. Wind is clean and renewable and the technology has advanced to the point where it can provide enough electricity for entire communities.

Wind power generation is most popular in coastal areas which receive a steady wind. Wind turbines can be grouped together in "wind farms" which can produce a significant amount of electricity. This power can be used in parallel with power produced by conventional source.

Wind power generation can also be used by individual home-owners, although this is more practical in an urban rather than a city environment. Those who are truly interested in living "off the grid" can also use solar cells to produce electricity on days when there is not enough wind to drive the turbines.

For maximum efficiency, wind turbines should be mounted on high towers so that they are not affected by turbulence created by buildings and trees. Towers also provide access to stronger and steadier winds.
