Energy Conservation Program

Energy conservation has enormous implications for individuals as well as society as a whole, and for this reason many states and municipalities have set up some sort of energy conservation program. Although the policies differ from location to location, the aim of these programs is to use existing resources more efficiently while reducing costs for businesses and individuals.

Sometimes the cost of making a home or business more energy efficient is too great for the business owner or home owner to bear. Insulating buildings and installing more energy saving devices is a great idea, but if the expense is too high many people just go without.

Energy conversation programs have a dual purpose. First, they aim to make people aware of the necessity for reducing energy consumption. Second, they provide funding to finance renovations or the purchase of energy efficient devices.

Insulating buildings is one of the best ways to reduce energy consumption. The cost of heating (in cold climates) or cooling (in hot climates) a house or business is one of the biggest expenses. Good insulation retains the heat or cool air in the building.

New buildings usually have to follow local guidelines for proper insulation but older buildings are notorious for their poor insulation. Renovation can be costly for the individual property owner, so for this reason many governments offer some sort of rebate or subsidisation to make the cost more affordable.

Local governments have a vested interest in seeing their citizens consume less energy. Energy is costly to produce, and the more money the citizens spend on energy the less they have for investing in the local community by buying goods and services.

Many municipalities and state governments have recognized the sound financial basis of conservation programs. This is great news for everybody – conservation benefits the environment, the economy, and future generations.
