Commercial Solar Power
Solar panel installations are available for both residential and commercial
buildings. In many ways, commercial solar power is the most cost effective
and beneficial of the two types of systems.
Since unimpeded access to sunlight is essential to solar power commercial
establishments established in plants with large roof areas are the ideal
candidates for solar panel. The entire roof area can be fitted with solar panels
which convert sunlight into Direct Current (DC) electricity through the use of
photovoltaic cells.
This DC current is fed into the electrical panel of the business where it is
used to offset the power drawn from the electrical utility company. If the solar
panels produce more power than is consumed by the business, the excess can be
fed back to the municipal power grid and the company receives a credit on their
electricity bill. The latter is called net metering, and the possibilities of it
vary from state to state
Since many companies pay for electricity at sliding rates depending on the time
of day, they can receive greater credits for producing excess electricity at
certain times of the day. For example, many power companies charge their highest
rates during summer afternoons. Commercial operations which can produce excess
solar power during these peak periods can see substantial savings in their power
costs.
These savings can result in lower overall operating costs which can give the
business a competitive advantage.
Since the cost of installing commercial solar power can be quite high, many
local governments offer subsidies and grants to offset the expense. The
advantages of commercial solar power – reduced loads on power utilities,
environmental benefits, economic returns to the local economy – have been
recognized by many municipalities which are actively promoting solar power.
Commercial solar power is not limited to southern states. Current photovoltaic
technology means that useful solar power can be generated in all the contiguous
states. As energy costs continue to rise solar power becomes more of a necessity
for businesses wishing to remain on top.
Whatever the future holds in store in my opinion we have to fase out fossil
energy generation. Now is the time to get involved. Traditional energy prices go
up, the price of PV systems is coming down. But before you make decisions study
the possibilities.
